How to Use a Menstrual Cup: A Beginner's Guide
Share

Learning how to use a menstrual cup is easier when you understand the routine before your period begins. A cup collects menstrual fluid instead of absorbing it. This guide explains the basics for beginners in Pakistan and points you to Lilac's product instructions for the details specific to your cup.

Before Your First Use
Read the Quick Start Guide included with your cup. Check the cup and wash your hands before handling it. Prepare and clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Give yourself time to practise in a comfortable, private place rather than rushing before work or travel.
Choose your size before focusing on insertion. Lilac offers Small, Medium and Large cups, with capacities of 16 ml, 19 ml and 30 ml respectively. These are product capacities, not guaranteed wear times. See our menstrual cup size guide or try the Lilac size finder.
How to Insert a Menstrual Cup
- Wash your hands and make sure the cup has been cleaned as instructed.
- Fold the cup using a method shown in the supplied guide. Keep the fold held as you begin insertion.
- Choose a comfortable position, relax and gently insert the folded cup as directed.
- Allow the cup to open. Check its position and seal according to the guide. If it feels painful, stop rather than forcing it.
It can take practice to find a routine that feels comfortable. The smallest cup is not automatically the right choice for every beginner; flow and individual fit also matter.
When Should You Empty It?
Lilac's published product guidance describes wear for up to 12 hours, depending on flow. Empty it sooner when needed, especially on heavier days, and never exceed the instructions for your product. At first, checking more often can help you understand your own flow and the cup's capacity.
How to Remove a Menstrual Cup
Wash your hands, relax and reach the base of the cup. Gently pinch the base to release the seal, then ease the cup out while keeping it upright as much as possible. Empty it and clean it according to its instructions. Do not pull on the stem alone to remove a sealed cup. This seal-release principle is also described in the Hertfordshire County Council reusable period products guide.
Cleaning and Storage
Follow the cleaning instructions supplied with your Lilac cup. Let it dry before storage, and keep it in the carry pouch between periods. Our menstrual cup cleaning and care guide explains how to organise this routine and introduces the Lilac Sterilizer accessory.
Common Beginner Questions
Can a cup leak?
Leaks can happen when the cup has not opened correctly, the fit is unsuitable, or it needs emptying. Review the product instructions and ask the Lilac team for fit guidance if the problem continues.
What if using a cup hurts?
Stop if insertion, wear or removal is painful. If you cannot remove the cup, seek medical help. For individual health concerns, including use with an IUD, ask a qualified clinician before use.
